Dynamic Templates overview

Blocksify Dynamic Templates let you build one layout that displays the live content of every matching post, page, product, or archive.

This overview explains where templates live, how they select content, and how to create a first reusable layout without editing theme files.

What is a Dynamic Template?

A Dynamic Template is a block layout that replaces the theme’s normal article or listing when its display conditions match. A single template can serve every blog post, every page in a category, one product, a product archive, or another supported view.

The theme still supplies the surrounding header, footer, sidebar, and other page elements. Blocksify replaces the current article on a single view or the current listing on an archive; a 404 template supplies the missing page body.

How do Dynamic Templates work?

Open Blocksify → Dynamic Templates to manage them. The list includes Type, Applies to, Status, and Modified columns. Edit is the primary row action, while the Actions menu contains Edit, Duplicate, and Move to Trash.

The Dynamic Templates list shows Type, Applies to, Status, and Modified columns, with the Actions menu listing Edit, Duplicate, and Move to Trash.

Duplicate creates a draft copy with the same blocks and template settings. This is useful when two layouts share a structure but need different conditions or styling.

Build the layout with blocks and live data

Add Blocksify blocks as you would on a regular page. Use Dynamic Data to place the current title, excerpt, author, featured image, product price, or archive information into that design.

An archive layout normally includes a Content Loop that follows the current archive. For example, the same template can list every post on the Northstar Studio blog page and only Interior design posts on that category page.

Choose where the template appears

The editor’s Dynamic Template document tab contains Display on and Don’t display on. Each section has a + (Add condition) button. Include conditions choose eligible views, while an exclusion removes a narrower view from those matches.

A template with no Display on condition appears nowhere. See Template display conditions for every condition and the rules used when templates overlap.

Preview a real entry or archive

Editor preview is the sample-entry picker for a single template. It defaults to the most recent match, or you can choose another entry; when a condition targets one exact entry, the picker reads Locked — [entry title].

Archive templates use Editor preview — term, Editor preview — author, Editor preview — date, or Editor preview — search query. When the first selected term determines the sample, the picker shows a locked value such as Locked — Interior design. On the published site, blocks use the entry or archive the visitor is actually viewing.

The Dynamic Template document tab shows Display on set to posts in the Interior design category, no exclusions, and Editor preview set to Small Workspaces, Serious Storage.

Control the width inside a template

Blocksify takes the template’s available width from the real theme column. For a Section inside the template, open Layout and use Content width: From Theme, Custom, Full width, or Edge to edge.

Custom accepts px, %, vw, rem, or em. Full width keeps the Section gutter, while Edge to edge removes it; those two choices appear when the Section uses wide or full alignment.

The Section Layout panel shows Wide width alignment and the Content width menu with From Theme, Custom, Full width, and Edge to edge.

Understand which template wins

When templates overlap, Blocksify uses specificity, exclusions, and a final tie-breaker; see Template display conditions for the complete “which template wins” rules.

Create your first template

  1. Go to Blocksify → Dynamic Templates and click Add New.
  2. Enter a descriptive title such as “Northstar blog posts.”
  3. Add the Blocksify blocks that form the article layout.
  4. Connect the title, image, author, and other changing values with Dynamic data.
  5. Open the Dynamic Template document tab, find Display on, and click the + (Add condition) button. Follow the display conditions reference when you need a narrower target.
  6. Check Editor preview against a representative entry and adjust the design.
  7. Click Publish. The template replaces the normal article on matching views.
The published Northstar blog posts template shows dynamic post content on the canvas and a Single entry condition with Editor preview in the Dynamic Template document tab.

Why use Dynamic Templates?

Keep repeated layouts consistent

Change the shared template once instead of rebuilding every post or product. Matching entries continue to supply their own text, media, and other live values.

Design without editing the theme

The block editor controls the article or archive listing, while the active theme keeps the surrounding page. A theme switch does not delete your Dynamic Templates.

Combine design with live content

A single design can show the right title, image, date, author, or product details for each visitor. That separation makes templates reusable without turning their content into fixed placeholder text.

Next step

Choose a target with Template display conditions, then connect the layout to real content with the Dynamic Data overview.
